Nikolay P. Pokhilenko

Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor, Dr. Sci. (Geology and Mineralogy), Novosibirsk, Russia

Research Interests: mineralogy and geochemistry of kimberlites and lithospheric mantle, geology of diamond deposits and methods of forecasting and prospecting.

Profile:

2011 – Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences

2006 – Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences)

Academician N.P. Pokhilenko has shown that the nature and intensity of the metasomatic transformations of the lithospheric mantle’s root parts, associated with the lower mantle superplumes, have a decisive effect on the diamond content of kimberlites of different ages.

On the basis of a comprehensive study of kimberlites and diamonds in the southern Slave craton, he was the first to obtain data that directly indicate the existence of super-thick (> 300 km) lithosphere blocks within the ancient platforms. Co-author of a complex of mineralogical and geochemical methods for prospecting and evaluating diamondiferous kimberlites, which contributed to the discovery of a number of deposits in Yakutia. Co-author of the forecast and participant in the discovery of the Arkhangelsk diamond province, the discoverer of the world-class diamond deposit Snap Lake (Canada). He is the author of the confirmed forecast of a new diamond province in the lower part of the River Mackenzie basin (Canada).

Author and co-author of about 300 scientific papers, 4 monographs and 4 copyright certificates.
